Joseph F. Johnston (born March 23, 1843 in Lincoln County, North Carolina; died August 8, 1913 in Washington DC) succeeded William C. Oates as the thirtieth Governor of Alabama, serving between December 1, 1896 and December 1, 1900, including the whole of 1897.
