Hamid Karzai was the first President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in 2014. On 2014 September 29, Karzai was replaced by Ashraf Ghani.

Hamid Karzai was officially elected and sworn in as the President of Afghanistan on 2004 December 7. He was re-elected as President on the 2009 August election.
In 2001, after the collapse of the Taliban government due to the US-Afghanistan war, Karzai became the chairman of the Afghan Interim Administration on 2001 December 22, transitioning into President of the Afghan Transitional Administration on 2002 June 13.

After a controversial election in 2014, Ghani brokered a deal with opponent Abdullah Abdullah in which Abdullah became the Chief Executive of Afghanistan, a newly created position.
