Neto was the first President of Angola from 1975 November 11 to 1979 September 10. Neto was originally the leader of Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola, fighting the Portuguese for independence. This was eventually achieved in 1975, with Angola becoming an independent country, with Neto president. A failed coup d'etat attempt in 1977 eventually led into a civil war which would last for several decades. Neto passed away as President while in Moscow undergoing surgery for cancer. José Eduardo dos Santos would succeed him.
