José Eduardo dos Santos was the President of Angola in 2002. He first took this position on 1979 September 10 after the death of the first president Agostinho Neto. Dos Santos was officially elected by the people on 1992 September 30 after an attempted reconciliation in the Angolan civil war. Unfortunately the results of the general election were not accepted by the opposition and the civil war continued. Another presidential election would not take place until September 5, 2008, where dos Santos was again re-elected.
As of 2008 August, general elections were to take place every 4 years. This has since been changed to every 5 years. The 2010 January constitution abolished the post of Prime Minister and gave the power to the president, who would be the leader of the party with the most seats in the assembly. Dos Santos, was re-elected as leader of his party in 2016, while parliamentary elections take place in 2017. In 2016, he has announced his intention to step down as leader in 2018.
