Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson was the President of Iceland in 2003. He became the 5th President of Iceland on 1996 August 1. Grímsson was the first Icelander to obtain a PhD in political science in 1970, and later became the first Political Science professor at the University of Iceland. He was the first president to veto a law from the assembly in 2004, provoking various debates on whether this power should be revoked or checked in some way. He is currently serving his 5th - 4 year term. 2 of the previous presidential elections (2000 and 2008) elections were uncontested.
