Following the death of the dictator General Francisco Franco, his designated successor Juan Carlos Alfonso Victor Maria de Borbon y Borbon-Dos Sicilias was proclaimed king by the Spanish parliament on 22 November 1975. He was anointed as King Juan Carlos on 27 November 1975.

Spain does not have "Presidents". The Head of the Government is the Prime Minister or "Presidente del Gobierno" and the Head of State is the King of Spain. The Prime Minister in 1978 was Adolfo Suarez. The King in 1978 was Juan Carlos I.
