Here in the good ol' USA, OUR Revolutionary War was begun on the fateful night of the eighteenth of April, in '75

Hardly a man is now alive...

-When a rebellious Boston silversmith by the unlikely name of Paul Revere and two of his (unnamed) friends reacted to a prearranged sign of two lamps burning high in the belfry of "the Old North Church", which sent them racing about the countryside shouting, "To arms! To arms! -The British are coming! The British are coming!"

The very next day, "the shot heard 'round the world" began America's Revolutionary War against Merry Old England, primarily due to King George's nasty ol' "taxation without representation" methods.

Then it was taught to our schoolkids one and all

"How the farmers gave them ball for ball..."

and how the British Regulars (The Redcoats) found us

"Under the trees at the turn of the road

And only pausing to fire and load."

Taxation without representation sounds good but ships then took rather a long time to cross the Atlantic and this bit of sea was extremely dangerous which would make it very difficult for Americans to play the game fully aware of what was going on. I might be wrong but I thought the taxation was to help pay for British troops to protect the colonies from the French. The seven years war was a recent event and Franco British relations were never that good. Again I am open to correction but Bill Bryson quoted the tax to be levied on Americans as sixpence a year or one fortieth of a British pound while UK residents were paying a full pound.

Hats off and a formal bow to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow!

I realise I should not be asking this question but then as they say what the hell. Back in April 1775 the thirteen U.S. states as indicated on the flag of America were part of the British empire, the remaining states were controlled by France or Spain or still in part by native Americans and they were not involved in this war. I don't know the dates when other states joined the union but I know Illinois joined in 1818. Can someone in words extant at the back of the eighteenth century explain this to me?

How did the American Civil War differ from the Revolutionary War?

The main difference between the American Civil War and the American Revolutionary War was that the Revolutionary War was fought between the British Empire and the American Colonies, the latter of which declared independence; and the "Civil War" was fought between the United States, and the Confederated States of America--two separate and distinct countries. So, in actuality, the "Civil War" was not a civil war, since it was a war between to countries.

No, Harriet Tubman was not in the Revolutionary War.
