I believe it was a Norwegian group led by Leif Erickson, who was actually of Swedish decent
Leif Erikson sailed southwest from Greenland to the islands off the coast of northern Canada and Newfoundland in 1000 or 1001. Leif gave the land the name Vinland.
Around the year 1000 Leif Ericsson and other Vikings explorers sailed into into Labrador waters and at L'Anse aux Meadows.
I have seen model steamboats that sit on top of my desk (about 12" long) and I have sailed on steamships that are 1000 feet long.
Colonialism started with the fur trade and the introduction of the HBC into Canada
the vikings did not originate in Canada. they are said to have originated in the Sweden- Iceland area. They did immigrate to Canada, though. Bjarni Herjolfsson was said to be the first Icelandic viking to land in Canada, but he isn't the official one. He was on his way to Greenland but lost his way, landing in Labrador or Baffin Island in Canada.A small settlement was discovered in Canada, and it it theorized that it was inhabited by a people of Viking-Eskimo extraction before being abandoned in the Middle Ages.Leif Ericson was born in Iceland, but moved to Greenland in 986. That same year Bjarni Herjolfson, who was following Ericson to Greenland, missed the island and sailed in a south-westerly direction and sighted both the Labrador coast and Newfoundland. And so hearing of Bjarni Herjolfson's adventures, Leif Ericson led the first voyage the North America around 1000 A.D.
