The City of Cincinnati is named for the Society of the Cincinnati. This was an association of American and French officers who had served the cause of the rebelling colonies during the US War for independence. They formed the society in part for mutual support, but also to take note of the fact that they had not attempted to exert political control over the new country through use of the army. The Society of the Cincinnati were named for Lucius Cincinnatus, an ancient Roman farmer who, when asked, gave up his plow and agreed to be a temporary dictator to save the city from invasion. After completing the task, he gave up his power and returned to his farm. From the Roman dictator Lucius Quinctius Cinciinnatus.
