When the Revolutionary War began, Bernardo de Galvez was the governor of Louisiana, a Spanish colony at the time. His contribution to American success was preventing the British from utilizing the Mississippi River.

The Louisiana governor who raised an army and fought the British in the South was Andrew Jackson. He led the American forces in the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812, successfully defending the city against the British invasion. This victory propelled Jackson to national fame and eventually led to his presidency.
He was the governor of Virginia at the time....He was criticized for fleeing when the British attacked Richmond, then Charlottesville.Interesting Fact:When Charlottesville was being attacked, the nearby area surrounding the Monticello (his mansion) was also attacked, and Jefferson fled - the British troops did not touch the Monticello. (it is believed that this was due to Jefferson's hospitality towards captured British Soldiers)
The US purchased Louisiana from France, to acquire the control of the port of New Orleans, of the River Mississippi and the French territories west of that river, thus avoiding they could fall in British hands.
