Good question.
The army commander was General George Meade, and some peple thought he should have been the one to take Lee's surrender.
However, the Union General-in-Chief, U.S. Grant, was travelling alongside the army in a mobile HQ, and it seemed to him that the surrender should be conducted between one General-in-Chief and another.
The Union won the battle of Appomattox.
The Union won the battle of Appomattox.
The Union won the battle and the war.
Robert E. Lee.
Ulysses S. Grant
well this was a very interesting battle, and my great great grandfather was the confederate leader his name being fredrick boyd jr. and the union joseph willliam the 3rd.
it wasn't a battle. it was here where Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant to end the Civil War. (The Court House at Appomattox.) Actually, there was a battle of Appomattox too (sorry to correct you). And the Union army won. 500 confederates were killed and 27,805 surrendered. Only 164 Union soldiers were killed one more correction- it wasn't at the Court House at Appomattox, the town was called "Appomattox Court House." The official surrender between Lee and Grant took place at a farmer's home there. ya that person is right it was a battle that the union won, and it was the battle that led to the battle in Texas that ended the Civil War.
who was the union general at the battle of fredericksberg
General Sherman of the Union and General Robert E. Lee of the Confederacy.
It is important because general robert e.lee needed to surrender to the union general.
Their final victory at Appomattox. Then they went back to being called the U.S. Army.
