The Statue of Freedom is a bronze statue located above the east front plaza of the United States Capitol building. The statue was designed by architect Thomas Walter and Thomas Crawford and in 1885. The execution took place years after Crawford's death by Clark Mills and Philip Reid, one of the slaves working at his facility. It was restored in 1993 by the New Arts Foundry of Baltimore, Maryland, after being struck by a helicopter.
