The main character was Simba, the son and prince of Sarabi, his mother, and Mufasa, his father, and the King of Pride Rock where they all lived. There was Zazu, the messanger bird for the King, Nala, Simba's female best friend, Scar, Simba's Uncle who wanted to be King in place of his brother, Mufasa, the three hyena's, Nala's mother, Sarafina, Timon and Pumbaa, a warthog and a Meercat that meet Simba later in the movie, and Rafiki, a babboon who is like the witch doctor.

Scar, (Simba's uncle and Mufasa's brother.) Banzai, Shenzi and Ed, (a trio of hyenas who are Scar's "friends".) Zazu, (the hornbill bird who is the king's advisor and Simba's babysitter.) Timon and Pumbaa, (a meerkat and a warthog who save Simba's life and with whom Simba lives during his exile.) Rafiki, (a baboon who is Mufasa and his family's friend and always blessess the new born prince or princess and presents him or her to the kingdom in a royal ceremony.)
The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride: New characters are: Kiara is Simba and Nala's daughter and their first and only child. Zira is a grown up female lion whose official origin besides that she belonged to Scar's pride, is unknown, but there are several fan theories. Kovu is Zira's youngest child and the last born before Simba exiled them after returning and killing Scar. The film states twice that Scar was not Kovu's father. Nuka is Kovu's older brother. Vitani is Kovu's older sister and Nuka's little sister.
In the book universe there are many profit fanfiction books and comics published before the second movie came out. The books and comics introduce numerous characters such as Simba and Nala's son Kopa, Zazu's mother Zuzu and more lion cubs in Simba's childhood such as Tojo, Malka and so on, but none of them exist in the official movie universe.
