The Corps of Confederate General John Bell Hood was in the Confederate Order of Battle at Chickamauga. He, however had his arm in a sling from a wound suffered at the Battle of Gettysburg. During the Chickamauga, he received a wound to his leg which later had to be removed.
Based on Union General Rosencrans' retreat to Chattanooga after the Battle of Chickamauga, Confederate General Bragg could take a position on the south side of the Tennessee River. In this position Bragg could force a greater retreat by the Union army because Bragg could cut the rail link Rosencrans needed to bring in supplies.
The Battle of Chickamauga, fought from September 19 to 20, 1863, was won by the Confederate forces led by General Braxton Bragg. The battle was one of the bloodiest of the American Civil War and resulted in a significant Union defeat. Following this victory, the Confederates were able to drive the Union Army back into Chattanooga, although they were unable to capitalize fully on their success.
