Father Damien was born in Tremeloo, Belgium. Damien's first name was Joseph de Vuester. He and his father worked at a family farm, his mother did the same. As for his older brother, the worked at a chruch down the road. Damien's father told him one day that farming didn't suit him and he needed to find another job, Damien agreed and found a hobby for teaching and preaching Catholicism. He joined his brother, Phampile at that church. Phampile was supposed to go to Hawaii for a mission, but he caught typhus, a disease and was to ill to go. So Damien took his place and on a boat he went to Hawaii. He joined the church in Honolulu and took the name Father Damien de Vuester and went to Moloka'i to help rebuild, teach and help the people of Leprosy. (Leprosy is a disease where your limbs, like your arms and legs lose feeling and rot away when you get cut. Becasue most of the time, when you get cut, you don't feel it so you don't know. Then it gets infected and rots away your arm or leg.) Father Damien lived in Moloka'i, with his lepers. He died in April 15th, 1889 from Leprosy. He was 49.
