Willie O'Ree was the first black player, 1958, Boston Bruins. He was Canadian, born in Fredericton, New Brunswick. The first African-American was Valmore James, 1981, Buffalo Sabres, born in Ocala, Florida.
Of course there were and still are "Black Indians," that is people of African and American Indian heritage. This combination has been with us since the time of the Spanish in Florida and was accelerated by the practice of slavery by certain American Indian tribes in the south. It is estimated that 80% of African-Americans have Indian heritage.
Mary McLeod Bethune was a teacher and civil rights leader, and advisor to President Franklin D. Roosevelt who started a school for African-Americans in Daytona Beach, Florida (what is now Bethune-Cookman University).
