Alan Shepard (1923-1998) was the first US astronaut to reach space, on a sub-orbital flight on May 5, 1961. His space capsule was named "Freedom 7" and the launch vehicle was Mercury-Redstone 3.

His home was in New Jersey during the time of his space adventure.

* The first man in space was the Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, who made a single orbit of the Earth a month earlier, on April 12, 1961.

Alan Shepard was the first of the Mercury astronauts to enter space, his flight was sub orbital, meaning he didn't actually orbit the Earth, that was left to John Glenn.

Alan Shepard's flight took place on May 5th 1961, when piloting Freedom 7 he became the second man in space. He reached a height of 116 miles and landed 302 miles from where he launched.

Shepard later went on to become the 5th person to walk on the Moon.

He died in 1998 aged 74.
