* Kalpana Chawla was born March 17, 1962, and was raised and educated in India. She moved to the United States in 1982 to continue her aerospace engineering studies and earned two Master of Science degrees. She was the first woman of Indian descent to fly into space, aboard the space shuttle Columbia on November 19, 1997. She flew a second flight on Columbia in January, 2003, and was killed when the craft broke apart during reentry. * Sunita Williams is a US Navy officer and astronaut, born September 19, 1965. Her father is of Indian descent, with the family's ancestral home in Gudjarat. In December, 2006, Sunita flew aboard the space shuttle to the International Space Station, where she remained aboard until April, 2007. This set the single-mission endurance record for a female astronaut, 195 days.
Alan Shepard (1923-1998) was the first US astronaut to reach space, on a sub-orbital flight on May 5, 1961. His space capsule was named "Freedom 7" and the launch vehicle was Mercury-Redstone 3.
His home was in New Jersey during the time of his space adventure.
