This may be surprising, but no one is really certain. The numbering system we use for years now was started many years afterwards, and it's become pretty clear that the person who came up with the idea miscalculated, but by the time this was discovered it would have been too confusing to change things.

Herod the Great died in 4 BC, so Jesus' birth must have occurred some time prior to that, unless the gospel writers were confused and conflated him with someone else (most likely one of his sons: Herod Archelaus, Herod Antipas, or Herod Philip II).

Actually, Jesus was born 6 or 5 B.C., just to remind you B.C. years go down. So if you calculated it, Jesus was about 33 when he died, so Jesus was Born- 5 or 6 B.C., and he Died- between 28 and 30 A.D.

Rudolf Bultmann of Germany's Marburg University, acknowledged by many as the twentieth century's most influential theological thinker, condemned as useless further attempts to try to reconstruct the Jesus of history: " I do indeed think that we can now know almost nothing concerning the life and personality of Jesus, since the early Christian sources show no interest in either, are moreover fragmentary and often legendary."

That said, we find a story of the life and mission of Jesus in the four New Testament gospels. We should find it strange that Bultmann could find it impossible to reconstruct the Jesus of history, with so much wealth of detail about his life in the four gospels, two of whose authors (Matthew and John) appear to have known Jesus personally. However, the gospels were originally written anonymously and only attributed by the Church Fathers to the disciples whose names they now bear later in the second century. Scholars say that it is unlikely that any of the gospels were written by eyewitnesses to the events they portray. They also say that the Gospels of Matthew and Luke were actually developed from Mark's Gospel, with additional sayings copied from the hypothetical 'Q' document. Also, John's Gospel was actually inspired by Luke's Gospel, with some material taken direct from Mark. So, rather than having four separate sources that largely agree and thereby confirm the story of Jesus, we really only have one source, copied by the other authors who clearly knew nothing about Jesus other than what they found in Mark's Gospel. And Raymond E. Brown (An Introduction to the New Testament) assumes that Mark seems to depend on traditions (and perhaps already shaped sources) received in Greek, so that we do not know how good Mark's sources were and how much of his Gospel was a literary creation.

To the extent that we can rely on the gospels, Jesus worked many miracles, removed demons and preached to crowds of Jews. His intention seems to have been to reform Judaism, but a new and different religion, Christianity, began after his death. Christians believe that Jesus was crucified by the Romans, then rose from the dead and was seen by the disciples before ascending bodily up into heaven.
