The first astronomer of Orissa was Samanta Chandrasekhar Singh Mohapatra. He lived in Khandapada town in Nayagada district. He was very intelligent from his childhood. At the age of 10 he learnt astronomy from his father. He used only a bamboo stick to get the data of the stars & planets etc. He also observed animals and birds near him. He had an very interesting habit. He used to measure the distance of his neighbors by his own foot steps. He made an amazing discovery. He measured the distance from the backyard of his house to the Jagganath Temple in Puri. It measured 1,15,200 foot steps! He could measure the solar system with the help of only a bamboo stick!
