African-Americans got voting rights long before the first woman was appointed to the US Supreme Court. The Fifteenth Amendment extended voting rights to African-American men on February 3, 1870; The Nineteenth Amendment granted women the right to vote on August 18, 1920. Some states allowed women to participate in state and local elections earlier than 1920. President Ronald Reagan appointed the first female US Supreme Court justice, Sandra Day O'Connor, in 1981.

Two African-American men have served on the Court:Associate Justice Thurgood Marshall (retired June 1991, deceased)Associate Justice Clarence Thomas (still seated)We have also had three female Justices on the Court:Associate Justice Sandra Day O'Connor (retired 2006)Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (still seated)Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor (joined court in 2009)Sonia Sotomayor is Latina.

In 1967, President Lyndon Johnson nominated Thurgood Marshall as the first African-American Associate Justice on the Supreme Court. He was in office June 13, 1967 - June 28, 1991. He was preceded by Tom C. Clark; and succeeded by Clarence Thomas, a conservative African-American nominated by President George HW Bush.Marshall, former lead counsel for the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, argued 32 cases before the Supreme Court and won 29. One of his most famous cases was Brown v. Board of Education, (1954).
Unfortunately, the Supreme Court has only had white male Chief Justices to date, but the day will undoubtedly come when an African-American leads the Court. Bear in mind the Supreme Court has only had seventeen Chief Justices since it was established in 1790, so the opportunities for diversity have been few.
