Yes, WikiAnswers does have ranks. The 'ranks' are contributor levels, and if you make a certain amount of contributions, you are upgraded to the next 'rank' or contributor status level.
Depending on the popularity of the category, it may or may not be at all difficult to make enough contributions to be listed as a Top Contributor of a category. As such, being a Top Contributor in and of itself doesn't mean much. It's the quality of your contributions, not the quantity, that will help you "earn your mark."
To get a new contributor rank, you must contribute more to the WikiAnswers community. For example, to get the Bronze contributor rank you must make at least 500 contributions.
The Ruby level contributor is the highest-level badge you can earn for contributions. To get this badge, you need to make 500,000 contributions. You can do this by answering/editing questions, organization, asking questions, or community.
There are a few reasons for this. The first reason is that their contributions were outstanding to others, and many people who saw this contributor gave them a trust point for their excellent contributions. The other reason is that this person had all of their friends make an account and give them a trust point.
You are required to make 100,000 contributions to become a Platinum Contributor.Contributions include answering questions, asking questions, editing questions and recategorizing questions.

You can request to be something more- such as a supervisor or part of the vandal patrol. If you make enough contributions you will become a bronze, silver, gold or platinum contributor. See the help center for details.
Although I have no way to know what all the contributors to this site are actually thinking, it would seem pointless to envy another contributor for having more contributions. We all have the opportunity to answer as many questions as we like, or make whatever contributions we wish to make. You might possibly envy the superior knowledge of some very well informed contributor, but you still would be unlikely to envy the quantity of their contributions. And even then, we all have the opportunity to become better informed, if that is what we wish.
No, actually it is not that hard at all compared to the other ranks like a Platinum or Ruby. You need to make 5000 contributions to get the Silver Contributor. It should not take too long. Contributions include answering questions, editing questions, re-categorizing questions, working with alternates, and message board posts. Getting the Silver is easy if you go on for at least an 1 hour everyday, and in 2 weeks should have a Silver Contributor!
