Rould Amundsen was born on July 15, 1872, and led the team of explorers who first set foot at the South Pole in December 2010.

As a premier explorer, Amundsen was known for many firsts, including leader of the first humans to navigate the Northwest Passage, team leader of the first humans to set foot at the South Pole, and captain of the first air passage over the North Pole. As well, he was the first human -- undisputed -- to have set foot at both the North and South poles.
