Anna Mae Hays, Chief of the Army Nurse Corps was the first female to wear a star when she attained that rank in 1970 The first to become a Major General was Jeanne M. Holm, USAF. The first to become a Lieutenant General was Carol Mutter, USMC.
The first Armed Forces Day was held on May 20, 1950. This day was established to honor and recognize the service of the United States Armed Forces and to promote public support for military personnel. It is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of May.

The DEFCON ( the Defense Readiness Condition) was first implemented by the United States Armed Forces on October 2, 1959. It is an alert posture used the the Armed Forces of the United States. DEFCON has five graduated levels of readiness for the US military.
When President James Buchanan was in office, the cabinet members in charge of the armed forces held the Federal positions of Secretary of War and Secretary of the Navy. The Secretary of the Navy was Isaac Toucey, who later became the US Attorney General. The position of Secretary of War was first held by John B. Floyd (who was asked to resign), then by General Joseph Holt.
