No she wasn't. The first woman in space was Valentina Tereshkova of the Soviet Union, who flew aboard Vostok 6 on June 16, 1963.
The first woman (not girl) in space was from Russia-- her name was Valentina Tereshkova, and she flew her first mission in 1963. In America, the first woman astronaut was Sally Ride, who flew her first mission in 1983. (It should be noted that as far back as the 1960s, several other qualified American women, most notably Jerrie Cobb, tried to persuade NASA to allow women to fly into space, but NASA was very resistant to having women astronauts at that time.)
Roberta Bondar is a girl. She is a Canadian physician and former astronaut, known for being the first Canadian woman to travel in space. Bondar flew on the Space Shuttle Discovery in 1992, contributing to scientific research in microgravity.
