It was the Italian Galilleo Galilee.

The first human to study the moon was probably some prehistoric person whose records are long since lost. The ancient Greeks, Britons, Aztecs, Mayans, and Chinese all left evidence that they were studying the moon. Galileo was certainly one of the most prominent persons to study the moon during the Renaissance, but definitely not the first.
