Some vampires have special talents that they had as humans but which are simply enhanced when they become vampires. Edward has to ability to read people's minds, but for some reason he is unable to read Bella's mind. Edward has bronze hair and topaz eyes when he's not thirsty. Carlisle saved her so she would get her blood sucked by James and die. Carlisle never sucks blood unless the person is dying he then turns them in to a vampire that doesn't suck human blood. James was a tracker. Alice and Bella are the only two who have ever made it away from James.
