Who is credited for discovering Neptune?

Galileo, although he had no idea he had found a new planet, and did not note it as such, and is therefore, not credited. Neptune was predicted mathematically by a French astronomer, Urbain Le Verrier. Two observers at the Berlin observatory found Neptune within 1 degree of where Le Verrier said it should be.

The credit properly should be given to Urbain Le Verrier who predicted Neptune's location. Johann Gottfried Galle actually made the observation, the same night he received Le Verrier's letter urging him to search and giving him the approximate location ... Le Verrier's prediction was within about 1 degree of the actual position as observed by Galle.

It later developed that James Challis had previously observed Neptune at least twice, but due to his rather casual approach to the search (and the fact that his star map of the region wasn't as good as Galle's) he had not realized at the time that it was the new planet he was looking for.
