The second person to hear of God. Atheists and skeptics have been around quite literally since before religion. Even if the second person to hear of god accepted the existence of this all powerful, all knowing, all loving, all caring, super being, they, at least for a second, questioned the validity of that notion.

Do you have to believe in God to be an atheist?

Answer:Atheist means "without god". An atheist does not believe in the existence of any deity or god(s). He is not in conflict with the belief in a god(s), conflicted about the existence of a god(s), in denial of the existence of a gos(s). It's simple - to an atheist there is no god(s).If you compare it to a person who does not believe in Santa Claus or the monster under the bed, you would never say that such a person really believes in these beings, but does his best to deny them.
