As the primary definition of a Prophet is one who is chosen by God and given divine messages for the people of God. As such, many would say Jesus was the Last of the Prophets.

However, the term is used many times in the New Testament speaking of the 'newer' role associated with prophets. As the written word was not readily available for the growing Church, God and the Apostles used certain men to be proclaimers of God's revelation (see Acts 13, 1 Corinthians 14, Ephesians 2 and 4). These 'prophets' filled a gap that existed in the early Church while 'Teachers' explained the meaning of the revelation, helping people apply it to their lives. One could say the prophets of the early Church were the 'preachers' or ones that communicated revelation directly from the now freely available 'Holy Spirit' of God and Christ.

After Jesus, prophets became the foundation of the Church and a building only needs a single foundation. This in no way prevents God from giving a divine message to someone for somebody else. But this is not a role of a prophet.

Further, if God chose to speak through someone today, that person would speak 100% the same as the message in written form - The Bible. Jude was inspired to tell us:

Jude 1:3King James Version (KJV)

3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

We are forewarned not to believe every 'spirit' as there are many false prophets (1 John 4:1). Further, if we find something wrong, we should discard it immediately. But we are not to despise prophecy:

1 Thessalonians 5:20New King James Version (NKJV)

20 Do not despise prophecies

When and if you hear something that fully agrees with Scripture but do not understand it, pray for help to be able to:

James 1:5New King James Version (NKJV)

5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.
