In 1961, Major Yuri Gagarin of the Soviet Air Force was launched from the

Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. He and his Vostok capsule completed

almost-but-not-quite one orbit of the Earth, and touched down on land several

miles short of the launch site at 108 minutes after launch. Gagarin toured the

USSR and the world as a space hero, was never launched again, and died in

the crash of a small trainer aircraft several years later.
