The first to discover a nova in 1572 was the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe. He observed a new star in the Cassiopeia constellation and documented its appearance and disappearance over a period of about 18 months. This event was later named "Tycho's Nova" in his honor.
The first recorded observation of a nova is attributed to the Chinese astronomers in 185 AD, who observed a bright "guest star" in the sky. However, there may have been earlier instances of novae that went unrecorded.
