The Canaanites, Hittites, Emorites, Perrizites, and Girgashites all occupied parts of
the area when the children of Israel returned after their two centuries of bondage
in Egypt. Those were displaced relatively quickly, and there has been a continuous
Jewish presence in that land since then, regardless of which colonial empire may
have ruled it at any given time.

Jesus, our blessed Redeemer, lived here on Earth in the land known then as Palestine, ruled at that time by the Roman government. The majority of the people who lived in Palestine at that time were Jewish. After World War 2, the Balfour Declaration established the state of Israel back on it's original land. land that was promised to Jacob (Israel) by the Creator God Himself, Blessed Be He! Today the land is known as Israel, and the mainly the people who now live in Israel are Jewish.

Judaism is popular in Israel because most Israelis are Jewish. The Jews were given the land of Israel by G-d as an inheritance and therefor it only prospers when Jews live there. Whenever Jews are chased out or exiled the land return to be desert-like; compare the land of Israel now to what it was like 100 years ago under foreign rule.
Cause the land has links to their religious identity. Most people who live in Israel today live there because they were born there, their friends are there, their livelihoods are there, etc. They see no reason to pick up and leave; it's their home.
NOTHING! They live there now.
Initially, they were one small group: Abraham's family. But they grew to live in cities all over the land of Israel.
Israel controls 78% of the former Mandate of Palestine compared with 22% in the West Bank and Gaza. However, it should be noted that Palestinians are not forced to live there; they can literally live anywhere in the world other than Israel and a large number of Palestinians who did not flee Israel live inside of Israeli borders without restriction.
