The Bible
The first printed books, known as incunabula, were produced in Europe in the mid-15th century. The Gutenberg Bible, printed by Johannes Gutenberg in 1455, is often considered the first major book printed using movable type. This marked a significant development in the history of printing and book production.
The earliest bibles - indeed all books - were written by hand, the first printed bible was the Guttenberg Bible, printed in 1454 or 1455.
I don't know. But the first one is the Bible.
Helen Sewell (and Mildred Boyle for some books) was the first illustrator of the "Little House" books. In 1953, the new editions were published with Garth Williams' illustrations.
Gutenberg printed the first religious book, in this case the bible, in 1456.
The book, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was illustrated from the very first edition, in 1865.Lewis Carroll had drawn illustrations for his hand-written version of the story Alice's Adventures Under Ground, which he gave to Alice Liddell (the real Alice) as a present in 1864. But he didn't feel that his drawings were of a high enough standard for publication so, when he was preparing the book to be published, he engaged John Tenniel, a cartoonist for the satirical magazine Punch, to provide illustrations. When the first edition was printed in 1865, Tenniel was disappointed with the quality of the printing as he felt that it didn't do the illustrations justice, so almost all of the 2000 books were disposed of and it was printed again. This edition, which was printed in 1865 but dated as 1866, was the first edition of the book to be commercially available.
Well, they never said who edited the stories when they first came out, but a few years later in 1953 the illustrations were edited by Garth Williams. Then in 1971 First Harper Trophy edited them and then in 1981 the illustrations were edited again by Garth Williams.
Woodcut printing for books was first used in China. It was specifically during the Tang dynasty (618-907 AD) that this technique was developed to create printed books.
