Step 3 of the Anaconda Plan involved capturing the Confederate capital of Richmond, Virginia. From 1864 to 1865, the Union Army, under General Ulysses S. Grant, launched a series of offensives, including the Overland Campaign, which aimed to engage and weaken Confederate forces. The relentless pressure and attrition tactics, combined with the Siege of Petersburg, ultimately forced the Confederates to retreat. This culminated in the fall of Richmond in April 1865, effectively fulfilling this objective of the Anaconda Plan.
