It was named after GEN Hamilton Howze, who was a soldier from the day he was born (his dad was Commandant of Cadets at West Point and General Howze was born in the West Point hospital) until the day he died. He fought as a tanker in World War II. After inventing the Army's airmobile (later to be renamed Air Assault) doctrine he served as the commanding general of the 82nd Airborne. His corps command was XVIII Airborne Corps. He finished out his service as Commander in Chief, Eighth Imperial Army in Korea.

General Howze died in 1998 and was buried next to his dad in the West Point post cemetery.
