King Charles I. The absolute rule of Charles I caused Parliament and the Crown to separate and gave Parliament more power than before. This civil war caused the colonies in North America to rethink their position in British politics and their place in the British Empire. Although many of the first colonies sympathized with British monarchy, other newer colonies with persecuted peoples favored Parliament. This division of power sowed the seeds which would later result in the American Revolutionary War

Charles' death followed the English Civil war between King Charles and his parliament - which Parliament won
