He was king from 1189-1199 and was considered a hero in his time. His mother was Eleanor of Aquitaine one of the most powerful women in mid evil England. He joined the third crusade in 1187 and arrived in June 1191. Enroute home he had to land near Venice and was imprisoned by Duke Leopoldo of Austria and then he was handed over to the German emperor Henry VI who ransomed him for 150,000 marks. In February 1194 he was released and he returned to England.
