AnswerBritish leaders during World War One were:

Herbert Henry Asquith b1852 d1928 Prime Minister from 1908-16

His premiership was a difficult period dominated by the question of Irish Home Rule and the campaign for female suffrage. He was Prime minister at the outbreak of World War One and established a coalition government in 1915. But rather than boosting his government's support as hoped the coalition proved unpopular.

In a personally disasterous move Asquith effectively sidelined himself by accepting Lloyd George's suggestion the war be directed by a small cabinet committee which excluded the Prime Minister. This would ultimately lead to lead Asquith to resign in December 1916.

David Lloyd George b1863 d1945 Prime Minister from 1916-22

Following Asquith's resignation it was Llyod George who was asked to form a government. Having already earned respect as the energetic Minister for Munitions it was his enthusiasm and organisational skill that proved inspirational to the war effort earning him the knicknames of "The Welsh Wizard" and "The Man Who Won The War". After the war however, he was widely regarded as a war-monger and suspected of selling honours (sound familiar?). When the coalition collapsed Lloyd George lost office. Many years later, however, he played a vital roll in the downfall of Neville Chamberlain by attacking his policy of appeasement and his handling of the disasterous Norwegian campaign in 1940.
