Spain was still the independent kingdoms of Castile, Leon, and Aragon in 1505. Spain was not united to become Spain until Charles I of Spain inherited all three kingdoms. That was the first time Spain was a single political entity.

The ruler of Castile and Leon was Juana la Loca (Joanna the Crazy) and she was under a regency or one sort or another until her death in 1555.

Ferdinand II was the King of Aragon.

Ferdinand and the regent co-ruled the kingdoms, that is they consulted and decided on a common course of action, and then implemented them separately.

Spain did not have one leader during this period, but this was the time of the later Spanish Habsburgs.

The following Kings ruled Spain from 1600-1700

Felipe III (Philip III) 1598-1621

Felipe IV (Philip IV) 1621-1665

Carlos II (Charles II) 1665-1700

When Carlos II died, the War of Spanish Succession occurred as the Bourbons were set to inherit the throne of Spain in the wake of no further Habsburg heirs.
