In 1949, Mao Zedong (also spelled Tse-tung) and his communist guerrilla army (the Red Army) took control of Mainland China away from Chiang Kai- shek and his Nationalist forces. Guerillas are members of small military forces that generally make surprise attacks. Chiang Kai-shek and his forces then fled to Taiwan. Mao Zedong set up the People's Republic of China.
