Who discovered electrons in an atom?

J.J. Thomson is credited with discovering electrons in an atom through his experiments with cathode rays in the late 19th century. His work led to the development of the plum pudding model of the atom, in which electrons were embedded in a positively charged sphere.

Identify all scientists in chronological order that were involved in defining the atom?

The term goes back a ways- scientifically, to a man named Democritus, he thought of the term we use today (atom), though it is spelled different in his native language of Greek. John Dalton had his own theory on atoms, though the first model was developed by J.J Thompson. The way I remember it is to think of choclate-chip ice cream. He proposed there being one large particle with smaller negative particles throughout. Often, it is referred to as the plum pudding model. Next was a man named Ernest Rutherford, who furthered the discovery of atoms in his gold foil experiment. Niels Bohr, who I believe knew Rutherford, made the model of orbitral rings. Our technology, especially in the mid and late 1900's has allowed us to complete this model accurately.

What does a button in a Christmas pudding signify?

The superstition goes that if a man finds a button in pudding he will become famous.

What does the custom mean when an unmarried man finds a button in the plum pudding?

Basically, it means nothing! I'm 72 and English. Traditionally, the Christmas dinner my family would have sat down to in Liverpool, England, would be a turkey dinner and all the trimmings. Only when the pudding was served would warnings of beware of the 'silver sixpences' (old English coinage saved over many years just for this Christmas occasion) be issued by the more mature family members to the younger (children) generation. Children would be warned not to swallow the coins should they find one!If an unmarried man finds a a button in his plum pudding, he should be grateful that he has avoided swallowing the button (and check the button on his trouser flies is still there) and nothing else. Anything else is simply superstition!
