So many come to mind that it is almost impossible to pick one alone. Considering that steam was used to drive the results of a lot of invention it is hard to go past James Watt's enormous improvements to the steam engine. Perhaps there were more refined or better engineered inventions but since the question is most important I would say James Watt.
