The Spanish soldier who led an expedition in search of the mythical fountain of youth was Juan Ponce de León. In 1513, he landed on the east coast of Florida, believing it to be an island where the fountain might be found. However, the fountain of youth remains a mythical concept with no evidence of its existence.
Hero's lover was Leander, who was known for swimming across the Hellespont every night to visit her. Tragically, Leander drowned during one of his nightly swims, leading Hero to throw herself into the sea in grief.
The stormy winds blew out the torch that Hero held to guide Leander to her across the Hellespont. He lost his way and was drowned. When Hero saw his dead body she threw herself into the sea to be with him.

The unusual thing about the drowned man is his exceptionally handsome appearance, which defies the typical features of drowned bodies. The villagers explain this by attributing the man's beauty to his mysterious origins beyond their own isolated village, suggesting he may have come from a place where such beauty is more common. They view him as a supernatural or mythical being due to his striking looks and the impact he has on their lives.
