The Taijitu (Yin Yang symbol) dates back to antiquity, and its impossible to find out who the original artist was. The concept of Yin/Yang itself has various ways of being shown, and so, the Taijitu is actually several symbols.
The most common one (black and white swirling waves with dots of the opposite color inside of them) was actually also used by the Ancient Romans on their shields, purely decoratively though. The Taoist symbol, although identical, is unrelated.
