Well, nobody's sure. Anne thought it was one of burglars who robbed Mr. Frank's offices. It could have been too. The burglar was robbing them at night, when the annexe became alive and filled with noise. If I heard that, I would have thought that those people where having a party or they were hiding Jews. But I wouldn't have turned the Franks in.
This is not known. There were three separate inquests after the war to try and determine who was responsible for the betrayal, all of which could not find enough evidence against anyone to prosecute. It remains a mystery to this day.
It is believed that the person who turned in Anne Frank's family was Willem van Maaren, a warehouse worker who was helping to hide them but later betrayed them to the Nazi authorities.
