James Madison (born March 16, 1751 in Port Conway, Virginia; died June 28, 1836 in Montpelier, Virginia) succeeded Thomas Jefferson as the fourth President of the United States, serving between March 4, 1809 and March 4, 1817, including the whole of the year 1812. He had to flee the White House when parts of Washington were burned by the British. The failures of some campaigns in the War of 1812 led to Madison's support for both a stronger military and for a national bank system.
