It is a common knowledge that the world is round. I never read or heard anybody teach that the world is flat.

A very very long time ago, the world once was thought to be flat. The horizon that we see now, people use to think that when you got to that point you would fall off the edge of the world. Not until boats and navigation came into fruition, the then thought "brave" explorers, set out to discover the edge of the world. It wasnt until they started sailing familiar waters that the theory of a round world came to be. Interesting huh?

Uneducated scholars of the medieval period. Most philosophers thought the earth was circular. Aristotle was aware that the earth was circular since he noticed stars disappeared as you moved, he made the observation that a lunar eclipse could only occur if the Earth was spherical shaped, and ships disappeared hull first into the horizon. Eratosthenes took a quite accurate measurement of the radius of the Earth. Ptolemy took a smaller measurement. But Lactantius, Cosmas indicopleustes, Washington Irving, and John Draper would be to name a few.

I don't think any scientist ever contended that. People have known the earth was round for thousands of years. You might be thinking of Copernicus, and later Gallileo, who got in trouble for pointing out it the earth went round the sun and therefore wasn't the center of the universe.

A theory about the earth's structure?

The Earth has a layered structure consisting of the inner core, outer core, mantle, and crust. The inner core is solid iron, the outer core is liquid iron, the mantle is mostly solid but can flow like a very thick liquid over long timescales, and the crust is the Earth's thin outer shell where we live. This structure is known as the "D-layered Earth model."
