Davy Crockett was briefly the proprietor of Maryland after winning it in a poker game against the governor. However, when the President heard about this he bet Davy Crockett that he couldn't throw a hammer over the White House and won. Davy Crockett lost Maryland and it was returned to America.
The charter for the colony of Maryland was granted to George Calvert Baron of Baltimore. He died, however, before the colony was settled. His son, Cecil Calvert or more commonly know as Lord Baltimore, saw to it that the colony was settled. In 1633, the first group of settlers sailed for the colony led by Leonard Calvert, Cecil Calvert's younger brother.
