In 1927, Charles Lindbergh was the first aviator to cross the Atlantic Ocean while flying 'The Spirit of St. Louis'. In 1932, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to cross the Atlantic Ocean in an airplane. She repeated the feat over the Pacific in 1935.
It has been argued that Clarence Chamberlin (no relation to the British diplomat) may have claim to this title even though he had a non-pilot passenger. He made the crossing in a plane called the Columbia within a year of Lindbergh's flight. It is interesting to note the contest rules for the Orteig Prize only stipulated a one-way flight (not necessarily solo) between New York and Paris.
Captain John Alcock and Lieutenant Arthur Whitten-Brown of the Royal Air Force flew non-stop across the Atlantic in 1919. In the next eight years, 82 others flew across the Atlantic.
Finally, on May, 20-21 1927, Charles Lindbergh flew the "Spirit of St. Louis" to Paris, becoming the first to fly it solo. For this he received the "Medal of Honor." He was 25 years old at the time.
