The Gettysburg Address was delivered at the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on the afternoon of Thursday, November 19, 1863, during the US Civil War, four and a half months after the Union armies defeated those of the Confederacy at the decisive Battle of Gettysburg. Lincoln was invited as the second speaker and many people in Pennsylvania did not believe the US president should be the main speaker.
